The new bike area looks good, and the extra standing space there would be useful too, not sure how popular the keep clear markings will be though!

Completely agreed. Wow! Its transformed them! Very very impressed, I like how the panels have been painted lilac and white, it makes them look so much brighter. Lino replaced, makes the unit look cleaner and matches the colours. Is this sponsored by WYPTE/Porterbrook as it seems that other units don't get quite such luxury. Now, if the same can be done to ex-merseyrail 142's and the ATN 156s (when their time comes) then we're onto a winner! Top marks for that refurbishment though, it will make the 144's something to look forward to :o

With regard to the refurbishment of 144006, is this the first time that they have had any major interior refurbishment since being built in the late 80's, apart from having high backed seats installed during Arriva Trains Northern days.

This is the second refurbishment. The refurb in 2003/04 was more than new seating (new passenger steps, new flooring, cab refresh, new internal partitions and other minor changes).

I'm fairly sure 150141 has been done too.

Is it just me that thinks the seat covers on the referbished 142s were done on the cheap, last week whilst on shunts i noticed that around 50% of the upright covers were hanging down leaving the padding exposed. Instead of putting a thin strip of velcro around to keep it in place why didn't they make them slightly bigger for an overlap and staple them into place so they are more secure.

I think all the Northern refurbishments have been done on the cheap and it's just some have come out better than others. The 142 that ran the 21:17 Manchester to Chester service on Friday had the new Northern seat covers and the original brown flooring and orange rails. I think the ATN 150s have turned out best and the FNW 156s have turned out worst - mainly because the seat covers were replaced when they were in need of a good clean rather than replacement and the carpets just got a good clean when they've worn very thin in places and left a very mis-matched interior.

156s (ex-FNW) are getting a full refurb (allegedly) before the end of the year including new carpets.

Is the 323 refurb still going ahead? I think Lancastrian's post a while back about extra strengthened services has cast a bit of doubt on it, due to a lack of units to fill in with 2x142s having less capacity than 1x323.

My thoughts exactly. Seeing is believing!!

Though my couple of sources was Dyfasfysgy (sorry, can't spell your username but you wrote that very informative 156 website :) ) who I believe was in touch with the ROSCO with regards. Plus it was mentioned in yournorthern that a 156 was going for C6 overhauls.

edit: typo.
